TURN AND SLIP INDICATOR
The TURN and SLIP INDICATOR shows the rate and direction of a turn. It tells the pilot if he is performing a coordinated turn using all his controls most efficiently.
If the indicator at the top turns towards 'L' to the left marker, then the pilot is making a standard rate coordinated turn to the left. If the indicator arm turns towards 'R' to the right marker, then the pilot is making a standard rate coordinated turn to the right. Here the plane is not turning, since the indicator is at the center marker. If the indicator goes beyond either the left or right marker, this indicates the plane is making a steep turn.
Near the center of the indicator is a bubble and 2 white lines. When the bubble is outside the lines and to the right, the plane is slipping to the right; outside the lines and to the left, the plane is slipping to the left. Here the bubble is in the center indicating no slipping. See the examples below for the details.
Steep turn to the left, slipping to the inside of the left turn.
here the arm is towards the left hand side beyond the left marker, indicating a steep, left turn. The center bubble is also to the left indicating that the plane is slipping to the left as well. Since the direction of slip is the same as the direction of turn, we say the plane is slipping to the inside of the turn.
Standard rate coordinated turn to the left.
As the center bubble is in between the lines, the plane is not slipping. Since the indicator arm is towards left hand side to the first marker, the plane is making a standard coordinated turn to the left.
Standard rate turn to right, slipping to the outside.
As the indicator arm is to the right hand side to the first marker, the plane is making a standard rate turn to the right. Since the bubble is to the left of the white lines, this indicates the plane is slipping to the left. Because the direction of slip is opposite to the direction of turn, we say that the plane is slipping to the outside of the turn.
